Sophie and Rich’s Westonbirt Arboretum Half Marathon

“In 1986 at the age of 19, Dad was involved in a car accident that changed his life. He suffered severe brain trauma and was in a coma for over two weeks following the accident. Initially it was not known whether he would survive.”

You can read more about Rich’s amazing story and how he has progressed over time since his brain injury, on their just giving page, where you can also donate: https://www.justgiving.com/page/sophie-bowen-1713373447822

Throughout his life Rich has completed four half marathons in order to raise money for Headway, the most recent being 2012. At the start of this year Sophie also got into running and they decided to run a the Westonbirt Arboretum Half Marathon together on the 23rd June 2024 to again, raise money for Headway.

“Without the support from Headway my Dad would not be where he is today and would not have recovered in the miraculous way he has. If you feel that you would like to support us in our effort by donating, we would be extremely grateful.”

Headway Bristol would like to say a big thank you to Rich and Sophie for choosing us as their charity of choice to sponsor for their run. We wish you the best of luck and cannot wait to hear how it goes. In the meantime, if anybody is able to, please donate and help Sophie and Rich reach their target goal. Thank You!

Brain Injury Week 2024

A life re-written

This years Brain Injury Week’s theme is ‘A life re-written‘ this campaign will show how brain injury can affect anybody at any time and focusing on how it can throw peoples life plans up in the air, change goals and who we are.

To support this plan, Chloe (Community and Engagement Lead / Support Worker) will be interviewing some of our clients and their families to discuss how their plans have been thrown off course by brain injury and how they have changed.

If you would like to be involved in the interviews, email: [email protected]

You can show your support for Brain Injury Week by sharing our posts or creating your own campaigns and tagging us.

For More information about this and further ways to get involved you can visit Headway UK

Social Hub – Quiz and Pizza Night 28th March 2024.

Social Hub Quiz and Pizza Night ❓🍕

This social hub was a huge success, our clients all had really positive feedback to give from the night and our volunteers/staff really enjoyed themselves too. We made our own pizzas and used the pizza oven to cook them (you can find more pictures on our social media pages).

Thank you to Steve for volunteering your time to man our pizza oven to cook the pizzas in what ended up being the dark! Thank you to Mari, Kath, Chloe and Millie for ensuring the evening ran smoothly and everyone was happy, fed and had drinks. Our next Social Hub is on the 16th May and we will be challenging the group to Karaoke! These events are for the brain injured community only, they are able to bring carers or a +1 if needed for support, they are open events, meaning the group don’t need to be Headway service users to attend.

Easter Coffee Morning 2024

Thanks to our amazing supporters we raised a total of £954 for our charity!👏💰☺️

We had an amazing couple of hours at our annual Easter Coffee Morning. It was a really positive morning, with your support and donations we raised a fantastic £954.

Thank you to everyone who came along to join us, as well as those who entered our raffle and support us from afar by simply entering through our social media, or just by sharing our posts. Every like, share or comment goes such a long way! Thank you to the organisations and businesses that donated prizes for our raffle and tombola stall.

We had breakfast baps, hot and cold drinks, a raffle, cake stall and a tombola which all ran smoothly thanks to our staff and volunteers.

It wouldn’t be possible to do what we do without your support at these events so THANK YOU. We will be uploading our upcoming events to our What’s On page as well as posting regularly on our social media pages, so keep an eye out for what else is to come.

Cardiff Day Trip

A small group of our Frenchay Centre clients and Greenway Centre clients took a train ride to Cardiff that was kindly gifted to us by Robin at GWR. Our service users had a brilliant day. Their time on the train was made enjoyable by the support from the staff at Parkway and Robin, they ensured ramps were prepared and that the timings were all correct.

This trip was organised as it is something that the service users may not have the chance to do without the guidance and support given. Once in Cardiff, they stopped off in Wetherspoons for lunch before making the journey back to Bristol. Thank you to Gloria our volunteer for giving up an extra day of her week to come and help out on the trip. Robin has kindly invited us for another train ride soon.

February Coffee Morning 2024

We held a coffee morning in February and we managed to raise £400! This money will go towards new merchandise and staff uniform for our events and appearances.

Thank you to everyone who came along and purchased a breakfast bap, drink or something from one of our stalls.

Paracording Activity with 77th Bristol Scout Group

Sarah and Caroline from the 77th Bristol Scout Group came in to visit out Friday Frenchay Group to run a paracording activity.

This activity was new and exciting for our clients, they enjoyed having some new people to come in and teach them new skills and to learn about a new topic!

If you have a skill or a business that you would like to come and talk to our clients and staff about then contact us on: 01174143222 or email [email protected]

Cotham School Careers Fair

Our Support Worker/Volunteer Lead Kath and our Community and Engagement/Support Worker Chloe, visited Cotham School for their Year 7 and 8 careers fair. It was a great opportunity to chat to the students and find out about what their career aspirations were whilst broadening their minds with what other NHS / Health and Social Care jobs are out there for them to consider.

We will look forward to attending more events like this in the near future. If you are having a careers event or a jobs fair, please get in touch so we can come along and share more about what we do, the career routes you can take and how to get into support work for brain injury.

Christmas Party 2023

We are officially ‘Wrapped’ up for Christmas 2023!

Thank You to our service users, their family/carers and our staff who attended our Christmas Party. We had a merry ol’ time celebrating with you all. Thank you Frankie and Family for the entertainment as always, you were fabulous.

There are more pictures and videos on our Facebook page if you are interested in what we got up to.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
See you all in January 2024.

Social Hub Bowling Night

Our Social Hub group went bowling last week for our social hub meet up at Tenpin, Avonmeads. Some healthy competition between the group kept things exciting!

We had two lanes as we were excited to have so many individuals attend this time around which is amazing to see. We are enjoying holding these hubs to bring the brain injured community together to build friendships, reduce isolation and loneliness. The groups are free to attend for all individuals with brain injury.
