Headway Bristol’s Reablement & Well-being Centres are safe and supportive environments. At the centres, individuals can practise or relearn skills that may have been affected by a brain injury. This page tells you:
- what happens at the centres,
- who can attend them,
- where and when sessions take place,
- how it is funded, and
- how to learn more and book.
What happens at the centres?
Staff and volunteers support individuals by improving their self-esteem, helping them feel more confident about dealing with their brain injury. We develop activities around attendees’ interests, abilities and needs. Some examples include: arts and crafts; cookery; health and fitness; cognitive skills, gardening; visits; courses; and talks.
These activities rely on skills that are often taken for granted but which can be lost due to the effects of a brain injury. For example:
- Cognitive skills including concentration, memory, information processing, comprehending instructions and forward planning.
- Physical skills such as co-ordination and balance.
- Social skills including recognising other people’s needs, taking turns, listening and making oneself understood.
The centres also provide a space for physical and mental well-being: being mindful, relaxing and catching up with friends.
Who can attend?
Adults aged 18 and over with a brain injury, who meet our criteria and who live in Bristol, South Gloucester or North Somerset, can attend Headway Bristol’s Reablement & Well-being Centres.
Where and when?
Sessions take place every day of the week. Exact hours depend on a service user’s needs.
- On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, services run from the Wellspring Settlement (in the same building as the Wellspring Surgery). This is at Beam Street, Barton Hill, Bristol, BS5 9QY.
- On Tuesdays and Thursdays, services run from the Brightwell Centre. This is at Bradbury House, Wheatfield Drive, Bradley Stoke, Bristol BS32 9DB.
How is it funded?
Individuals with an assessment of care needs from their local authority and to establish funding can have their place paid for by the primary care trust or by the local authority (through personal budgets or direct payments).
Individuals who want to fund their own access to this service they may do so on a private contract. In this case, Headway Bristol carries out its own assessment of needs and the individual pays the daily £84 cost for this service directly.
