A new chapter begins for us at Headway Bristol as we celebrate our move into the Woodside Building This marks a monumental step forward in our 40-year history, providing a long-term, secure home to anchor our vital work across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.
The relocation to the Britannia Road estate in Kingswood dramatically transforms what we can offer to survivors of brain injury, their families and their carers. Indoors, the Woodside Building provides significantly more physical space. This expanded footprint allows us to scale up our essential social and cognitive rehabilitation programmes. Our service users now have a comfortable, structured environment to relearn independent living skills, engage in creative arts and participate in tailored physical exercises. It also provides breakout spaces, where service users can relax together over a game of pool, table tennis, table football, or just watch TV.
Beyond the walls, the new premises feature beautiful outdoor areas. These green spaces already offer a peaceful, open-air escape, and we are currently transforming them to make them more accessible, so our service users can connect with nature, practice mobility and find their own moments of calm. The initial response from everyone attending our centre has been brilliant, with massive appreciation for the additional space and dedicated outdoor areas.
Our CEO, Mari Holcombe, explained that the vision for this permanent home is to create a multi-stage sanctuary, supporting families from the overwhelming early days of an acute hospital diagnosis all the way through to long-term community reintegration.
While the physical move went smoothly, our journey to unlock the building’s full potential is just beginning. We are actively calling on the local community, corporate partners and skilled volunteers to help us finish tailoring the space to the complex needs of our service users.
