When Headway Bristol organised a trip to an 80s weekend at Butlins Minehead, both service users and staff alike had a trip to remember!
It’s not always easy for brain injury survivors to get the opportunity to go on holiday. In fact, many steps of the process – such as the travelling itself, or the unfamiliarity of a destination – can be cognitively and physically challenging for many individuals. Headway Bristol kept all of this in mind when planning our weekend away.
Setting off in style
When service users met at our new centre, they boarded a coach with plenty of space to relax in (complete with ready-made snack bags!). The party set off down the M5, arrived at their chalets, unpacked and went off for a buffet tea together. Having 18 friendly faces around helped everyone feel right at home. That evening, there was the choice of heading out to have a look around or staying in for a spot of R&R (relaxation and Rummikub!).
Sunshine, swimming and neon spandex
On Saturday, the team filled up on breakfast – from fresh fruit and pancakes to a full English – and suitably fortified, they headed out. Some went into Minehead itself, walking along the sea-front, checking out the market and sharing a coffee and a chat. One brave individual even went for a swim!
The afternoon brought with it 80s outfit prepping. Think spandex, glitter, neon, tutus and leg-warmers… and as you can see from the photos, the effort was well worth it!
Tributes, Toyah and silent discos
The group watched incredible tribute acts to Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury and George Michael, while the more adventurous followed the crowds to see the real Toyah Willcox headline. There was also the chance to join in a silent disco that snaked its way around the huge resort.
The next day, the team enjoyed another epic breakfast, followed by belly-laughs at the comedy show, before trying (unsuccessfully!) to free some teddies from the arcades. All too soon, it was time to get back on the coach to head home.
A huge thank you
Everyone who went had a wonderful time. In fact, for some, it was their first holiday in years, providing a rare and beautiful opportunity to enjoy a change of scene with friends from Headway Bristol.
A massive thank you to the staff who gave up their weekend to make this happen. Fingers crossed there’s another similar trip soon!
