Volunteering at Headway: bringing joy, belonging and energy

This page lets you know more about Headway Bristol, the volunteering roles that are available and what we look for in volunteers

What is Headway Bristol?

We are an independent, non-profit charity with over 40 years of experience in supporting individuals affected by brain injury. Our mission is to help survivors regain independence and improve their quality of life through specialist social and cognitive rehabilitation.

At Headway Bristol, we believe in creating spaces of agency, comfort and connection for adults with brain injuries. Our centres are vibrant communities where service users can explore creativity, enjoy meaningful activities and feel truly seen. Whether volunteers are leading a quiz, chatting about the best sandwich filling, or joining a craft session, their presence helps build a culture of dignity, fun and shared humanity.

Volunteers are key members of the Headway family, and we are extremely grateful for their support.

What we look for in volunteers

Headway provides the training and support volunteers need. We welcome people of all backgrounds who bring:

  • Enthusiasm: Can you light up a room with a smile or a silly question?
  • Empathy: Can you listen, adapt and ensure everyone’s comfort and agency are respected?
  • Energy: Are you up for leading a game, joining a trip or sparking a conversation?
  • Reliability: Will you commit to showing up and being present?
  • Creativity: Do you enjoy arts, crafts, music, storytelling or just making everyday moments special?

You don’t need to be an extrovert – just willing to engage with kindness and curiosity.

We’re not looking for perfection we’re looking for presence:

  • Be kind.
  • Be curious.
  • Be open to learning.
  • Be willing to support our service users with dignity and fun.
  • Be part of the team, we’ll support you every step of the way.

Why people volunteer with us

Volunteering isn’t just about giving – it’s about growing.

  • Gain experience for university or work: Whether you’re studying healthcare, social work psychology, or just want to build people skills, this is real-world, heart-led experience.
  • Feel part of something bigger: Our volunteers often say they feel more grounded, more joyful and more connected.
  • Discover your strengths: You might find you’re brilliant at leading a quiz, calming a room or turning a rainy day into a dance party. Volunteering provides you with opportunities to try out new skills or activities.
