Headway Bristol offers a range of volunteering opportunities. On this page you can learn more about the Student Work Experience and Placement role, what our volunteers say about us and how to get involved.
Each year we welcome inquiries from psychology, health and social care students who would like to help survivors of brain injuries regain their confidence and skills. Whether you’re free for a week or a whole term, please do get in touch! We receive lots of applications and places are limited, so we recommend you contact us as far in advance as possible.
What does the role include?
As a volunteer in our Reablement & Wellbeing Centres, you will provide support in a team to help run various outings and activities. This may range from health walks and gardening in our allotment, to cooking, music and arts and crafts therapies. If you have a skill or talent you’d like to share, then we’ll encourage you to run your very own programme if you wish!

“I’ve loved volunteering at Headway because every week is different …
I feel immensely grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know each service user and their lived experience. The staff and service users have really made me feel welcome and appreciated from the start, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to contribute meaningfully to other people’s lives and give back to the community in a way that is fun, sociable and informative. It’s also been valuable for my own development, allowing me to grow as a person with increased confidence, compassion, and creativity.
I would highly recommend volunteering with Headway to anyone who is looking for a friendly, sociable volunteering experience where they can connect with people from all walks of life and make a difference in their lives. Being part of the volunteer team here alongside studying for my master’s in neuropsychology has allowed me to put the topics I learn about into context and exercise my compassion and genuine interest in the field, as well as having the privilege of witnessing the incredible work done by all the staff members at Headway.
