David Ball, Vice Chair of Trustees, Headway Bristol

What I do
As Vice Chair of Trustees, I support and deputise for the Chair. I support the board, ensuring effective governance and a productive environment.

My role includes supporting Headway on a regular basis with strategic planning, decision-making attending meetings remotely as well as face to face with key stakeholders whilst representing the charity at events.

My skills and experience
I worked in the aerospace sector, at Airbus UK, as Head of Procurement Operations & Industrially Operationally for nearly forty years. During that time, I managed a staff of up to 1,400 people and range of transnational projects. I bring these management and leadership skills to my role in the Bristol Headway team.

I am also proud to be an above-knee amputee of 44 years. This has driven me to support and help others and has given me insights into the enablement of people with disabilities. Personally, I have focused on seeing what I could achieve as an amputee – so far this has included triathlons, mountain biking, swimming and a career travelling the world.

Why I chose Headway
In 2015 my brother was involved in a severe industrial accident, resulting in a cognitive complex brain injury. This was how I was first introduced to Headway Bristol and the vital work they do. I also became aware that the number of people experiencing brain injuries is increasing, and that many survivors need additional support for mobility issues. Following retirement, I have chosen to support Headway Bristol as a trustee on a weekly basis.
