Can your everyday food choices change how much energy you have? What about your emotional well-being, or even your ability to focus?
These were just some of the questions that service users at Headway Bristol chewed over during a Food for Mood workshop, run by the Community Learning Team at Bristol Council.
During the morning session, participants learnt how certain nutrients help support brain health and mood regulation. Service users were asked to name a food that made them feel good and discussed why that was – it seems everyone has a food they associate with comfort, energy or happiness.

Putting those ideas into practice, our service users then prepared fresh wraps filled with hummus, cheese, chicken and salad vegetables. They made a dessert, using live yoghurt topped with fresh berries and granola – foods that contain probiotics, healthy fats, fibre, antioxidants and beneficial bacteria.
After the meal, participants shared their experiences, discussing how certain foods make us feel – including everything from nostalgia to the cultural significance on food – connecting the theory with real-life eating habits.
The workshop went down a treat with our service users!
“I found the course very interesting”
“The food we made was really tasty – 10/10!”
Headway’s Activity Coordinator, Millie Holcomb, said “Shani was fab – a huge thanks to the Community Learning Team from all at Headway.”
