Connecting cultures: Ramadan awareness session at Headway Bristol

The Headway community recently came together for an enriching educational session led by Bek, a dedicated volunteer and practising Muslim. The presentation aimed to foster inclusivity and deepen our understanding of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar.

The session provided a thoughtful look at the spiritual significance of the month, explaining that fasting from dawn to sunset is about more than abstaining from food and drink: it is in fact a time for self-reflection, spiritual growth and increased charity.

Highlights of the presentation

Bek shared a ‘day in the life’ perspective, detailing the early morning meal (Suhoor) and the joyful evening breaking of the fast (Iftar). Crucially for our community, the presentation also touched on how Ramadan intersects with health and wellbeing. Bek also gave an insight into how Ramadan is specifically celebrated in his native country, Uzbekistan, giving a mouth-watering description of plov

A spirit of community

“Sharing the traditions of my faith with the Headway family is incredibly rewarding. Ramadan is all about empathy and looking out for each another – that’s at the centre of what Headway does every day.”
Bek, Headway Bristol student placement volunteer

Millie Holcombe, Headway Bristol’s Activity Coordinator, added, “Our volunteers are the lifeblood of this charity. Sessions like this are invaluable because they ensure our environment remains a welcoming, inclusive space where everyone feels understood and supported.”
