Morris dancers bring spring spirit to Headway Bristol

This Easter, Headway Bristol, a charity supporting adults with acquired brain injuries, was treated to a vibrant display of traditional folk culture when the local troupe Bristol Morris visited for a special performance.

Dressed in colourful kits, the dancers filled the Headway Bristol centre with energy, music and atmosphere. Michelle Gadsby, Centre Manager, said:

“It was such a special day. The dancers made us all feel involved, going around and introducing themselves, and everyone loved it. And it was great to see some of our service users joining in with the dancing. They were also really interested in the tradition too, asking questions about the history of Morris dancing and the types of music that accompany it.”

The visit offered a wonderful opportunity for mood-boosting music and movement. The Bristol Morris troupe’s visit reminded us of the power of community, music and dance to lift spirits and bring people together.

Morris dancing during spring acts as a traditional ritual to welcome the return of warmth and ensure a fertile harvest. Its most iconic moment occurs on May Day, when troupes often gather at dawn to “dance up the sun,” symbolically awakening the earth. These performances, filled with symbols of rebirth like the Green Man, were historically believed to drive away the remnants of winter and bless the community with vitality and growth for the year ahead.

Thanks so much to Bristol Morris from all at Headway Bristol!
