“It’s nice to support someone to have the quality of life they deserve” – Lindsey, Support Outreach Worker, Headway Bristol

With a 40 year history behind us in Bristol, we are proud of our roots and achievements, supporting brain injured survivors and their families and carers. 2018 looks to be another year of expansion and growth as we continue to meet the increasing demand for our service and choosing the right staff to give that support remains crucial to our Charity operation.

As part of our dedicated Outreach Services team, your role will involve supporting our adult service users in their homes or out and about in the community; working with them to help develop their social and cognitive skills as part of their rehabilitation programme.   Your care industry training and experience will be put to good use, helping individuals regain their confidence, learn new skills and redevelop old ones.  We are looking for caring, friendly and reliable individuals who are able to work independently with individuals on a one to one basis, but also flexibility as part of the overall outreach services team.

Our Outreach Workers need to demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility and excellent time keeping. Some personal care maybe involved in accordance with individual care plans but your primary focus will be to support individuals with completing everyday tasks that most of us take for granted – from doing the shopping, cooking and housework, to getting on the bus to the local library or leisure centre.

An awareness and/or understsanding of the sensory, cognitive and physical disability of a person who has sustained a brain injury or other similar condition such as stroke, dementia or mental health would be a distinct advantage. The role can often be challenging and you will have the maturity and experience to be able to support those who have complex needs and behaviour problems.

Our core services are delivered across a wide range including Bristol, Bath, South Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and North/North East Somerset. We particularly welcome applications from support workers who live in and around the Weston-Super-Mare, Clevedon or Portishead areas but welcome applications from anyone who is flexible about where they work.

A full driving license and use of own car is essential for this role.

Qualifications: Minimum qualification required is Care Certificate and/or NVQ2 in Health & Social Care (and/or appropriate level of experience). The post is subject to a DBS check and satisfactory references.

Salary & Benefits: Hourly rate commences at £8.82 per hour (£16,056 pa full time/pro rata) and rises to £9.04 per hour upon successful completion of a six month probationary period.  We offer 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays (pro rata), time off in lieu, free parking and  a stakeholder pension.  Our staff training and development programme, which includes regular courses at our Day Centre site in Frenchay, will ensure that you remain up to date on all your key skills and experience.

Hours: Our core services are delivered Monday to Friday 9.00am-5.00pm – although some flexibility is essential as there is a requirement to occasionally work an odd evening or weekend (these will be agreed with you in advance).   These roles are offered on a part time basis, working a minimum of 8 hours and up to 25 hours a week. Flexibility to work any day is required, spreading your hours across the 5 days Monday to Friday.

As we would like to improve the ratio of male staff within our team we are keen to also receive applications from suitably qualified male support workers.

We are a local charity with a 40-year history of supporting brain injured survivors and their families/carers in and around the Bristol and the surrounding regions.

Whilst we are very fortunate to have a skilled and experienced team of support workers and employed staff in our Day Centre in Frenchay, we would not be able to deliver our services without the assistance of our volunteer team. This year we are looking for people who can spare a few hours each week in the following roles:

Day Centre Support Assistants & Activity Assistants

Fundraising & Events Assistants

Treasure Hunters, Researchers and Bucket Collectors

Receptionists / Office Assistants

As a volunteer at Headway Bristol you will receive an appropriate induction and training to help you settle into your role and we are happy to consider any availability from 9-5pm Monday to Friday.

Whether you are free for a few hours each week indefinitely or can help with the odd project or event, please do get in touch!

We are keen to source volunteers to work on a variety of projects within our Fundraising team and if you have time to spare and are able to commit for at least 6 months then we’d love to hear from you.

We are looking for talented, creative and passionate people who will help us promote our services and raise money for a fantastic cause.

As a Fundraising Volunteer, you will enjoy a varied workload, dependent upon your skills and experience which could include helping with corporate and community events planning and delivery, treasure hunting, researching venues, preparing reports and outcomes and developing our contact database. Duties may include:

  • Sourcing gifts in kind, raffle prizes and donations for events
  • Running stalls and organising bucket collections
  • Updating and developing our contacts database
  • Helping to source venues and make bookings
  • Assisting with the creation flyers, marketing and promotions material

No experience of event work or fundraising is necessary, however; the ability to organise your time, work as part of a team and to communicate effectively with other volunteers, staff, supporters and the general public is essential. Good IT skills will be required and we use MS Office, In-Design and other database systems (training can be given).

  • A full driving license and access to a vehicle is desirable but not essential.
  • Full induction, training and on-going support will be provided as appropriate.
  • We are looking for volunteers who can work at least 4-5 hours on one day during the week (between 9-5) and people who are also looking to join our bank of volunteers for key dates in our events calendar which may include working evenings or weekends. We are happy to consider people who can work either weekly or fortnightly and with flexibility. You will be able to commit to at least 6 months.
