“It’s nice to support someone to have the quality of life they deserve” – Lindsey, Support Worker, Headway Bristol

With a 40 year history behind us in Bristol, we are proud of our roots and achievements, supporting brain injured survivors and their families and carers. Our core services include a community outreach support service, day centre and carers support service and we are always interested in hearing from experienced support workers who would relish a role in the Charity sector.

We are currently recruiting for an additional member of staff for our dedicated Reablement & Wellbeing Centre team. This role will involve supporting adults with an acquired brain injury who attend our Centre in Frenchay; working with them to help develop their social and cognitive skills as part of their rehabilitation programme.   Your care industry training and experience will be put to good use, helping individuals regain their confidence, learn new skills and redevelop old ones.  We are looking for caring, friendly and reliable individuals who are able to work independently with individuals on a one to one and group basis, but also flexibility as part of the overall Centre support team.

Our Support Worker team is integral to the running of our cognitive rehabilitation programme within the Reablement & Wellbeing Centre and they need to demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility and a passion for delivering a first class service. Leading or supporting one to one or group activities, you will be confident with people from all walks of life, be pro-active, mindful of equality, disability and diversity, and understanding of the needs of individuals. The role will involve providing some very basic personal care but your primary focus will be to ensure that our service users have a positive experience, in line with their care plans. Our activities programme includes cooking, health walks and gardening, to playing games and participating in dance and music therapy.

An awareness and/or understsanding of the sensory, cognitive and physical disability of a person who has sustained a brain injury or other similar condition such as stroke, dementia or mental health would be a distinct advantage. The role can often be challenging and you will have the maturity and experience to be able to support those who have complex needs and behaviour problems.  You will also contribute to researching and planning activities and so some basic IT skills are sought.

Whilst the role is largely Centre based, our support workers need to be able to drive and have their own transport and in this particular instance we are looking for a trained mini-bus driver or someone who is happy to be trained early in their role. The post will involve occasional drop-offs and pick-ups of our service users to the Centre and taking groups out in the mini-bus for day trips and booked activities across the region.

Qualifications: Minimum qualification required is Care Certificate and/or NVQ2 in Health & Social Care (and/or appropriate level of experience). The post is subject to a DBS check and satisfactory references.

Salary & Benefits: Hourly rate commences at £8.82 per hour (£16,056 pa full time/pro rata) and rises to £9.04 per hour upon successful completion of a six month probationary period.  We offer 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays (pro rata), time off in lieu, free parking and  a stakeholder pension.  Our staff training and development programme, which includes regular courses at our Day Centre site in Frenchay, will ensure that you remain up to date on all your key skills and experience.

Hours: Our core services are delivered Monday to Friday 9.00am-5.00pm – although some flexibility is essential as there is a requirement to occasionally work an odd evening or weekend (these will be agreed with you in advance).   This post is offered on a part time basis, working 15 hours a week, between 10am and 3pm on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

As we would like to improve the ratio of male staff within our team we are keen to also receive applications from suitably qualified male support workers.

Good IT skills will be required and we use MS Office, In-Design and other database systems (training can be given).

  • A full driving license and access to a vehicle is desirable but not essential.
  • Full induction, training and on-going support will be provided as appropriate.
